Department of Art Graphic Design students Brooke LeBeau and Samantha Romand were featured in University at Buffalo’s 11th Annual Celebration of Student Academic Excellence. Their project, entitled The Effects of Graphic Design on Socioeconomic Status, focused on the ways preconceived socioeconomic status affects buying trends as well as how design influences purchasing habits within classes. LeBeau and Romand worked with instructor Renee Ruffino to expose an overall tendency within companies to ignore consumers from lower economic classes through a lack of design while creating an illusion of luxury for their higher end products. UB’s 11th celebration on April 16, 2015 acts to recognize the vision, goals, and commitments that unite the university as an academic community by acknowledging select outstanding students across a wide spectrum of academic fields and creative expression.
