The Gut Love project arises from questions concerning gut microbiota and the immune system. As a patient with Crohn’s disease, High’s interest in gut microbiota started with her own diseased body. The recent developments in medical research concerning this area create a paradigm shift in the treatment of patients, extending beyond our bodies to include ecological systems.
High is an interdisciplinary artist and Professor of Video and New Media in the Department of Arts at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute. She is a 2016 artist-in-residence for Coalesce: Center for Biological Arts.
Coalesce is a major facet of GEM, UB’s Community of Excellence in Genome, Environment and Microbiome, establishing a dedicated studio laboratory for biological art and emerging practices in the arts, as well as interdisciplinary coursework, residencies, workshops and exhibitions.
