Ou Ning, Lecturer, Columbia University
“Bishan Commune as a Practical Utopia”
Ou Ning is a multi-disciplinary practitioner from China. As an artist and filmmaker, he is known for urban research and documentary projects such as San Yuan Li (2003), commissioned by the 50th Venice Art Biennale and Meishi Street (2006), commissioned by the Kulturstiftung des Bundes, which premiered at MoMA New York. As a curator, he initiated the biennial art and design exhibition “Get It Louder” (2005, 2007, 2010), and curated sound installations at Battersea Power Station in London, commissioned by Serpentine Gallery (2006); 2009 Shenzhen & Hong Kong Bi-city Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture (chief curator); 2011 Chengdu Biennale (co-curator); Liu Xiaodong’s Hotan Project (co-curated with Hou Hanru, 2012-2013). As a writer and editor, he is known for his seminal books New Sound of Beijing (1997), Odyssey: Architecture and Literature (2009), The Chinese Thinking: Rem Koolhaas and Hans Ulrich Obrist Interviewed China’s Leading Figures (2012), South of Southern: Space, Geography, History and the Biennale (2014) and his literary bimonthly journal Chutzpah! (2011-2013). He is a frequent contributor to various magazines and books and has lectured around the world. As an activist, he lived in a small village in Anhui Province and founded the Bishan Commune (2011-2016) and School of Tillers (2015-2016), joining the new rural reconstruction movement in China. During this academic year, he will teach at GSAPP, Columbia University in New York.
Kristin Stapleton, Associate Professor, History Department and Asian Studies Program, University at Buffalo
“With and Without Acknowledgment: Influences on the Shape of Chinese Urbanization.”
Kristin Stapleton serves as the editor of the journal Twentieth-Century China and on the editorial board of Education About Asia, and is executive secretary of the New York Conference on Asian Studies. Her research interests include Chinese and comparative urban administration, the history of Chinese family life, and humor in history. She is the author of Civilizing Chengdu: Chinese Urban Reform, 1895-1937 (Harvard Asia Center 2000) and Fact in Fiction: 1920s China and Ba Jin’s Family (Stanford 2016). Her current research concerns Sino-Soviet cooperation in designing and managing “socialist cities.”
Shannon Bassett, Assistant Professor, School of Architecture and Planning, University at Buffalo
“Back to the Countryside! Recovering China’s Agricultural and Ecological Landscapes Countryside through Village Acupunctures”
Shannon Bassett’s research, teaching, writing and practice operate at the intersection of architecture, urban design and ecological systems. Her writing on both China’s explosive urbanization and its changing landscape, as well as shrinking cities and the post-industrial landscape in North America, has been published in Topos, Urban Flux (Beijing), Canadian Architect, Garten + Landschaft and Landscape Architecture China. Her design research has been exhibited both nationally and internationally, including at the Hong Kong and Shenzhen Bi-City Biennale of Urbanism and Architecture (2012). She has lectured internationally, as well as run design research studios in China collaborating with the Tongji College of Architecture and Urban Planning, the Tianjin School of Architecture and most recently, Turenscape-College of Architecture and Landscape Architecture, Peking University in both Beijing and Anhui province, with a focus on rural urbanism or “rurbanism.”

With and Without the Other is an exhibition of collaborative art works made by a group of artists and art historians who are graduate students and alumni from the Academy of Arts & Design, Tsinghua University and the Department of Art, University at Buffalo. The collaborations began in Beijing in January 2016 and were completed in Buffalo in September 2016. The resulting works, presented in a range of mediums, articulate something of the experience of working across the globe as creative thinkers who are at once collaborators, counterparts, and enigmatic strangers. The collaborators seek to shift our perceptions and interactions with one another by overcoming misunderstandings and finding a common language.
