On Wednesday, April 23rd, Department of Art students Brooke Lebeau and Samantha Romand presented their research at the University at Buffalo’s 10th Annual Celebration of Student Academic Excellence.  Their project, entitled “The Effects of Package Design on Consumers: How Designers Target Traditional Gender Roles”, was completed over the last semester under the mentorship of their instructor, Renee Ruffino.

In their abstract about the work, Lebeau and Romand write,

The goal of our research is to inform consumers of the potential sway of their purchases. This influence is for the most part a result of package design, which often reflects traditional gender roles. While not always subtle, there are many cues that reveal a product’s target audience such as color, imagery, and even label or package shape.
