The VISUAL STUDIES Department at UB invites applicants to study alongside internationally renowned artists and scholars in the vibrant Western New York art scene. UB is the flagship institution in the State University of New York’s 64-Campus system and supports University Art Galleries on two campuses.

The MFA program critiques visual culture and visuality in diverse forms such as art, design, rich media, science and technology.  Concentrations within the MFA are self-defining and flexible, supported by the diverse range of research interests and skills of internationally renowned faculty, visiting artists, designers and critics. All MFA students are given secure studios with 24-7 access. Located in the Center for the Arts, shared labs include photography (digital, b/w, non-silver), video/ sound recording and editing, printmedia (lithography, intaglio, screen, digital, relief and letterpress), sculpture, casting (foundry), installation, performance, communication design and electronics/physical computing.

The MA program engages study of art history while embracing a discursive approach to the field of Visual Studies. It is a space where historians, theorists and curators are compelled to engage multiple visual platforms and environments beyond the traditional discourse of art and art history. A Specialization (Certificate) in Museum Studies can be earned simultaneously to the M.A. degree.

The Ph.D. program will be announced soon.  Contact us if you would like to receive updates on this program.
