Alumni Spotlight

Byron Rich (MFA ’13)

Q:  What is your current position? Tell us about it.

A: Assistant Professor of Art, Electronic and Intermedia, at Allegheny College. Allegheny College is a small liberal arts college in Pennsylvania where students are required to work across disciplines to produce projects with broad social ramifications. I largely guide seniors through their projects, whether they are art majors, or minors, as they produce a body of work. Additionally I teach classes in electronic art, intermedia art, studio practice, and painting.

Q:  What was your favorite course that you took at UB and why?

My favorite course was Bioart with Paul Vanouse. That course in particular set the tone for the current trajectory of my career. My favorite memory is my first critique with Professors Paul Vanouse and Gary Nickard. They were brutally honest, but showed such a deep desire to see me become the kind of artist and scholar that they could be proud of. The combination of care and honesty in that critique made me confident that I had made the right choice in coming to UB.
